Westwind 1 Aircraft - The IAI Westwind is a commercial jet originally produced by Aero Commander as the Jet Commander 1121. Powered by twin GE CJ610 turbojets, it first flew on January 27, 1963, and received its type certificate on November 4, 1964, before the first delivery. The program was purchased by Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) in 1968, which extended it slightly in the Westwind 1123, and refitted it with a Garrett TFE731 turbo in the 1124 Westwind. The 16,800-23,500 lb (7.6-10.7 t) MTOW aircraft can carry up to 8 or 10 passengers, and 442 were produced by 1987.
Early-1121 Jet Commanders were powered by thin CJ610 turbojets, and had five starboard and three or four port windows.

Later 1123 Westwind was extended 22 in (56 cm), had top tanks and six starboard and five port windows.

After successful testing, the aircraft was put into series production and deliveries to customers began in early 1965.
After initial testing of the prototype, it was converted to production standard with 2.5 feet added to the fuselage length and increased payload and maximum weight. The second prototype first flew on April 14, 1964, followed by the first production aircraft in November 1964. The FAA granted type approval in November, the first customer delivery on January 11, 1965.

Shortly thereafter, Rockwell North America acquired the Aero Commander. The Jet Commander posed a problem, since Rockwell already had an executive jet of its own design, the Sablener, and could not keep both in production due to antitrust laws. So, the company decided to sell the rights to Jet Commander, who bought the AI in 1968.
Commander Jet production totaled 150 aircraft in the US. These included lengthening the fuselage and maximizing take-off, landing and maximum zero-fuel weight, and the wings were modified to incorporate double-slotted flaps and lowered leading edges and top tanks. The intrimable horizontal stabilizer was also modified to increase span and longer travel.
Shortly after the aircraft went into production, the original Geralt Electric KJ 610 turbojet engines were replaced with more fuel efficient Garrett TFE 731 turbofans.
Many airframe modifications were also made, such as lowered wing leading edges, a dorsal fin, revised nose pylons and nacelles, and further increases in maximum take-off, maximum landing and maximum zero-fuel weights. With improvements to several onboard systems incorporated, these changes resulted in 1124 Westwind

In 1976, after the terrorists landed on the Savoy Hotel in Tel Aviv, the Israeli Air Force decided to use the Westwind as a base for a sea patrol plane, called the AI Sea Scan. It was originally developed to meet the needs of the US.
In 1980, the 1124A model was delivered together; Modifications included a new wing CTR section and wings added to the tips. The revamped aircraft was called the Westwind II, replacing the original design in production. AI built the last Westwind in 1987, having built a total of 442 Commander Jets and Westwinds, which switched production to the Astra.
The Commander/Westwind Jet was a typical business jet arrangement, with two engines mounted in nacelles carried on the rear fuselage, but the wings were raised midway up the fuselage instead of the typical low wing arrangement of aircraft in this class.
At FL310 and Mach 0.74 (436 kn; 808 km/h), the 1124 burned 1,600 lb (730 kg) per hour, and 1,200 lb (540 kg) at Mach 0.7 (413 kn/h; 764 kg/h).

The 1124N Sea Scan is a maritime surveillance aircraft, the 1124 was renamed Westwind I following the introduction of the 1124A Westwind II.
The 1121C is an unofficial designation for 1121 aircraft modified under a Supplemental Type Certificate with increased all-up weight available since 1971.
